Kanda Batata Poha/Flattened Rice with Onions & Potatoes

Poha is a popular snack which originated from Maharashtra & Madhya Pradesh, has now become famous across India. It is perfect as a breakfast or snacks and taste even much better with a hot cup of tea or coffee. Most families in India make poha and each one has their own styling of making this scrumptious dish. Here’s my recipe of making Poha at home, do note it down:

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups Poha/Flattened Rice
  • 1 medium-sized onion/pyaaz, finely chopped
  • 1 medium-sized potato/aloo, peeled & chopped into small cubes
  • 1-2 chopped green chillies
  • 7-8 curry leaves
  • Mustard seeds-1 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric Powder 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chilli powder-1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam masala-1/2 teaspoon
  • Lemon Juice-1 teaspoon
  • Oil-4 tablespoon
  • Fresh/Frozen Green Peas-3/4 cup (Optional)

METHOD:

  • Wash the poha in a colander. Then sprinkle little milk also on poha for nice moisture and softness. Poha should be moist not mashed.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and when they start splutter add curry leaves and green chillies. Saute for half a minute.
  • Add onions and continue to saute till the color changes to golden brown.
  • Add chopped potatoes and green peas. Add turmeric powder and salt. Saute well and cover the pan for approx 4-5 minutes on low flame.
  • Remove the lid, add red chili powder and garam masala, stir well and again cover the lid for 2-3 mins.
  • Add soaked poha into this mixture and mix gently on a low flame for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add lemon juice and mix lightly. Taste the poha and if required add more salt.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and save hot.

TIPS:

  • While serving poha, you can also garnish with some namkeen mixture/bhujiya on top of it to enhance the taste.
  • It also taste well with fresh coriander chutney.
